Capacitors for Power Electronics

Photo: Kondensatoren der Leistungselektronik ... can be used for a wide variety of applications, even where extremely non-sinusoidal voltages and pulsed currents are present. The standard range of ELECTRONICON includes a multitude of capacitors both for AC and DC use, in the well-tried MPP and MKP technologies. Apart from the standard line there is a big scope of capacitors designed for the specific requirements of our clients.

1. AC capacitors

Damping Capacitors Usually connected in series with a resistor, these capacitors are designed for the snubber of undesirable voltage spikes caused by the so-called carrier storage effect during the switching of power semiconductors.

GTO-Damping capacitors
are capacitors designed especially for the snubber of voltage peaks at GTO-thyristors. Thanks to our MPP-technology, they have a very low self-inductance, absorb extremely steep rises of the voltage and carry very high rms-currents. Commutating capacitors Switched in parallel to a thyristor, these capacitors are designed to quench the conductive state of the thyristor. Since commutating capacitors are periodically and abruptly recharged, the peak current may substantially exceed the rms value. The very low loss factor of the MPPtechnology compensates for most of the losses caused by non-sinusoidal voltages.

2. DC Capacitors

...are used in power supply in radio and television technology (transmitters), high-voltage testing equipment, DC controllers, measurement and control technology, generation of high DC voltage through cascaded circuits, also in frequency converters for poly-phase drives, transistor and thyristor converters, in laser technology, lightning generators, and the generation of magnetic fields and high pulses of electrical energy. Smoothing capacitors
serve for the reduction of the AC component of fluctuating DC voltage. Compared with electrolythic capacitors, they have a much longer useful life and are less sensitive to overload.

Supporting capacitors, DC-Filter or Intermediate Circuit Capacitors are used for energy storage in intermediate DC circuits. They must be able to absorb and release very high currents within short periods, the peak value of the current being substantially greater than the rms value.

Surge (Pulse) Discharge Capacitors are capable of supplying or absorbing extreme short-time current surges. Usually operated at low repetition frequencies.
