Capacitors for parallel and series compensation of gas discharge lamps

Photo: Capacitors for parallel and series compensation of gas discharge lamps Compensating capacitors in MKP-technology are AC capacitors designed for individual correction of the power factor of transformers and magnetic ballasts in discharge lamps (e.g. fluorescent lamps, halogen and metal vapour lamps, high-pressure mercury vapour lamps, sodium lamps) in networks with a frequency of 50 or 60 Hz. This allows for an improvement of the light fitting's power factor to cos 0.9.

Our lighting capacitors are made in self-healing MKP-technology.

Carefully selected material and a large-scale thermal treatment of the capacitor windings guarantee a long operational life and stable capacitance. The dielectric system of the capacitors for parallel compensation is completely dry, i.e. free of impregnants or filling resin. The capacitors for connection in series are filled with a viscous polyurethane resin.

Special safety

photo: safety Special safety, e.g. against electrical and thermal overstrain, can be achieved by a thermal fuse inside the capacitor winding. When reaching a critical temperature the capacitor is disconnected absolutely reliably and irreversably. This prevents the disintegration of the polypropylene dielectric and further rise of temperature which might otherwise lead to total thermal destruction (catastrophic failure) of the capacitor.
For the first time, a reliable protection of lighting capacitors in plastic casing has been established.
This unique solution is being protected by the European Patent No. 0637040.

For applications with high ambient temperatures or in very humid climatic conditions we recommend to use our range of hermetically sealed capacitors in aluminium case which are tested and approved for temperatures of up to 100°C. These capacitors are provided with an overpressure break action mechanism (FP) for safe disconnection in the case of failure.
